Religious service prior to United States invasion of Iwo Jima, Japan during World War II. Marines gathered on the deck of a ship for Ash Wednesday services. A Catholic Chaplain conducts the service. The Chaplain serves the Eucharist to the Marines and imposes a holy cross of ashes on the foreheads of the Marines.
