Sailor being discharges after recovery. He walks with a cane. He limps as he walks, needing a cane to help him walk for the rest of his life. Flashback of past events in the film show how the doctor sneezed, failed to rescrub, cut his surgical glove, and contaminated surgical instruments, leading to disease in the patient.
