Glimpse of the U.S. Capitol dome. Members of Congress and associated staff and other persons are seen gathering in front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC , on April 2, 1917, for the first session of the 65th U.S. Congress of the United States (following a special session in March). Many people sit on the steps and others gather in clusters. Scene shifts to Jeannette Rankin, Republican representative from Montana, and the first woman elected to Congress. She and a man are trying to unfold a large American flag before the camera. Soon two more men help and they hold the flag spread out as Representative Rankin poses in front of it. Next, James Beauchamp "Champ" Clark, Democratic representative from Missouri (who would be elected Speaker of the House) shakes hands with James Robert Mann, Republican representative from Illinois, who served as House Minority Leader from 1911-1919. Elsewhere in Washington, Jeannette Rankin stands with suffragist Carrie Catt, in the back of an open car in front of the Washington D.C. headquarters of the National Woman's Suffrage Association. Rankin holds a bouquet of flowers. An American flag is displayed nearby. Next the car is seen pulling away, causing Rankin to fall back and sit, from where she was standing, in the back seat. Two more cars full of women follow. A cordon of police officers begins to move a crowd back, and two mounted policemen direct people away from the Capitol buildings. (Note: In this first session of the 65th Congress, on April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany.)
Prime Minister of United Kingdom Winston Churchill delivers a speech at the Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri (501 Westminster Ave, Fulton, MO 65251, United States). US President Harry S. Truman and other officials sit behind him on the stage. Churchill talks about the need to develop understanding with Russia and the situation in Europe. This is an excerpt from his speech entitled “The Sinews of Peace” (popularly known as the ‘Iron Curtain Speech’) and contains that reference. Churchill said “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and, in many cases, increasing measure of control from Moscow.”

Opening scene shows injured soldiers in World War 1 being transferred to a field hospital. Next scene, in the United States, shows disabled and injured veterans of World War 1, and recovering soldier veterans, as they exit railroad hospital trains at a train station, and are met by medical staff of Fort Sheridan, in Lake County, Illinois. Women offer the soldiers donuts from baskets. Veterans get into waiting ambulances. Civil war cannon in a snowy field, and view of Fort Sheridan grounds, including the Fort Sheridan water tower and barracks complex. Disabled veterans get out of ambulance and enter hospital facility at Lake Sheridan. Nurses caring for injured patients in hospital ward. A patient in a bed draws a picture. Nurses massage patient's hands and arms. Therapists and nurses using various therapy machines for patients, including one that appears to connect wires to a patient's arm.
