Madrid fortifies and civilians evacuate during the Spanish Civil War

Then camera focuses on statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza on the memorial to author, Cervantes, by sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera, on the Plaza Espana, in Madrid. Next is shown a building partially destroyed by bomb shelling. Citizens of Madrid are seen working to place protective walls around important monuments and buildings in the city. Masons work on the reinforcing walls, while citizens are seen busily going about their affairs in background. Several soldiers march into a guarded fortified area. A truck drives on a street, past a woman and small children sitting on some rubble. A streetcar moves along a street along with a horse-drawn covered wagon, and pedestrians, making their way past a long masonry protective wall. Two armed Republican soldiers ride on the roof of a bus. A Red Cross flag hangs beneath a Metro sign, above steps leading down into the subway. A long line of people waiting to buy vegetables at a small store. Masking tape crisscrossing the window of a shop to help proctect it. Pedestrians filling the sidewalks of a street walled by tall apartment buildings and shops. Some rubble in the street from rebel Nationalist shelling. Fascist Rebel bombardment of Madrid, during Spanish Civil War, angers population and promotes recruitment into the Republican Army. A group of men march down a street with a small boy, who appears to be in boy scout uniform, in the front rank, carrying a flag. Recruits are seen being organized into marching groups. Sidewalk in front of a railroad station is filled with new recruits. They march under direction of Republican soldiers. Motorcade of automobiles carrying Manuel Azana Diaz, President of Spain, stops surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd, in Valencia. The President steps from his car, enters a building, and delivers a speech emphasizing the democratic election of the government and decrying the need to defend it and the soil of Spain from fascist rebels. Scene shifts to several men in rural area, discussing the need to complete new irrigation projects in time for new defense of Madrid. They already have their pump and must build the pump house. One man types on a typewriter while another sketches the plan to pump water from the Rio Tajo (Tagus River), to irrigate crops. View of horse-drawn wagon loaded with cement for construction. Two men discussion construction plans. Masons using rudimentary methods to erect a pump house. Later view of pump house as men work on the roof. Spain recruits and trains soldiers for the Republican army during the Spanish Civil War
Spanish Civil War. Boy walks with his father, back from farm fields, to greet another son home on leave from duty with the Republican army. That son, in uniform, is seen surrounded by family members. He talks to a small boy wearing a soldier's hat, sitting in his mother's lap. The father and other son arrive and the soldier and his father embrace. Members of the family, from the very old, to the youngest, smile and listen as the soldier speaks about his adventures. Next, the soldier is seen drilling village boys after they return from work in the fields. Villagers watch from roadside. Scene changes to recruits in uniform marching in a square. The soldier and several of his village friends are also seen drilling. A large number of recruits are seen drilling in Madrid. Families and sweethearts say farewells as new soldiers prepare to depart for duty. Military trucks, displaying red flags, wait to carry the new soldiers away. Next, they are seen driving away with soldiers riding in back.
Spanish city experiences fascist shelling during Spanish Civil War
Camera pans walls of a Republican army base. Several statues stand on pillars between sandbagged fortifications. Barbed wire is seen in some locations. Camera pans down face of tall building showing shell holes in places. Sign next to elaborate entrance door refers to general mobilization. A Red Cross car displaying white flag rushes down empty street toward place where smoke is rising from rebel shelling. Another scene shows civilians running and one falling during a shelling attack. A shell explodes near the camera with black smoke billowing. The Red Cross car rushes to another location. City dwellers walk about near rubble from shelling. Boys look for shell fragments in the rubble. A woman holding a baby runs for cover. Another shell explodes nearby. Two civilians lie where they have fallen, victims of the shelling. (Narrator ascribes the shelling to German artillery.) A cyclist in uniform walks his bicycle through broken glass as he steps past the dead pair of victims.

View of sleepy village in Spanish hills. A Woman comes out of her house with a basket of food. An airplane is heard in skies above and someone shouts "aviación," and it echoes down the hill. Three airplanes are seen in formation overhead, followed by two more. The planes maneuver. Filmed closeup of explosions is followed by scenes of smoke rising in a village and people walking about in despair. Villagers in an alleyway look at rubble from a bombing. Two women and a baby look out through a hole blasted in the side of a house. Villagers gather near a large house with windows hattered and roof destroyed. They sadly walk past four dead bombing victims laid out at near the site including one young boy. Narrator states that three Junker planes did this. Interior view of roof destroyed in the house. View through hole in wall of the house, showing villagers outside mourning the two victims. Building exterior pockmarked by gunfire and scrapnel. Two little boys wearing army hats, pose for the camera, in front of the building, while another sits near a soldier cleaning his rifle. The boys are seen playing in rubble in front of the building. Scene shifts to a dogfight overhead, between two airplanes. One,that appears to be a Nationalist Fiat CR.32 biplane, is shot down and spirals to crash on the ground. Scene shifts, again, to Republican soldiers and local people looking through jumbled pieces of a downed Junkers plane spread over a large crash site. Seen, are a tail wheel and corrugated metal section, identifying the wreckage as that of a large German Junkers Ju-52 trimotor aircraft (clearly unrelated to the earlier dogfight scene).A placard is shown with data about the Junkers aircraft parts. A parachute is also seen with harness instructions. A view of landscaped through a gaping hole blown in a stone wall. An isolated house showing battle damage.
