Signal Corps weekly film reports sent to Photographic Center and used in training films for U.S. troops during World War II.
The role and contribution of the U.S. Army Signal Corps in combat and war. Amphibious landings of the first wave of Allied troops including Signal Corps Units in Normandy, France on D Day during World War 2. The Joint Assault Signal Companies (a Signal Corps Unit that accompanies the soldiers on every beach landing) go ashore in Normandy. Soldiers in landing crafts approach the beach. Landing crafts anchored along the shore line. A U.S. flag on the beach. Crafts approach the beach. U.S. Army Signal Corps combat photographers using motion picture cameras to film the battle that ensues on the beach and in the fields. Gun fire and explosions in the battlefield, filmed by combat cameraman. Allied aircraft in flight. Airmen load weekly film reports of the war in all Theaters made by Signal Corps officers from a van into an aircraft. The films are sent to the Photographic Center in New York. A soldier assembles the films. Technicians organize and arrange the films. They place the film reels onto racks. The film content is used to make training and orientation films for the U.S. troops. Troops watch the films in order to cut down the training period, and stay informed about the order of event in other Theaters of Operation. The films include 'Why We Fight' and 'The Fighting Men' series. Clips and recordings from these films.

Rabbi Chaplain Leon Rosenberg conducts services for Jewish Marines on Iwo Jima in World War II
Rabbi, Lieutenant Leon Rosenberg of the Chaplain Corps, conducts services on March 11 (D-day + 20) for Jewish Marines of the 4th Marine Division, on Iwo Jima, during World War 2. He stands in front of a makeshift altar containing a pair of candles and a cloth displaying the Star of David. He reads aloud from a small book. Marines are seated on the ground in a group. A truck in background drives away as a Marine photographer in background takes a picture of the seated marines. While Chaplain Rosenberg is reading, a jeep and another vehicle drive past in background. After break in sequence, the seated marines are seen with individual prayer books containing Hebrew script. They refer to the books during the service. In final sequence, the Chaplain continues to lead the service, with the marines now standing. (Note: Chaplain L. W. Rosenberg was the first Jewish chaplain to see actual combat with the Marines.. He went overseas with the Fourth Marine Division and was the, only Jewish chaplain to receive the Purple Heart, having been wounded on Tinian, 25 July 1944. Chaplain Rosenberg was in more Marine amphibious landings than any other chaplain. Among these were,assaults on Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima.

Opens with bell tolling Victory against Germany in World War II. Next, a slate reads: "Victory Leads to Peace," and a farmer is seen with cattle pulling a plow. But narrator says "the problem now is future peace," and a map of Germany is shown overlaid with "Your Job in Germany." A cartoon of a soldier is superimposed on the map, along with one of a World War 1 American soldier and a figure of possible future soldier with similar mission. Camera focuses on parts of German aircraft in a jumbled heap. Closeups of weary defeated German soldiers at end ot World War II. Glimpse of Adolf Hitler speaking and haranguing an audience from a podium in an animated and forceful way. Swastika flags displayed from houses in a quaint German town. Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Reich Minister of Propaganda, at a microphone. Glimpse of a German concentration camp. But as they appear, each of the Nazi elements promptly disappears, showing the scenes without such Nazi symbols and persons. Skeleton remains of bombed buildings. Flower displays. Bucolic German rural countryside and quaint old villages in peaceful settings. Camera focuses on a book titled "German History." Chapter I, titled "Blood and Iron," shows Image of Otto von Bismarck. German troops march in a parade. Narrator states that "under Bismarck, the German empire was built." (He formed the German Empire in 1871, unifying Germany with himself as Imperial Chancellor, while retaining control of Prussia at the same time.) The film shows mounted German lancers as it alludes to Bismarck's campaigns against Denmark in 1867; Austria in 1866; and France, in 1870. Germany's leaders celebrating its status, in 1871, as the mightiest power in Europe. Troops marching and girls dancing nearby. Farmers plowing field with a horse and cow. Classic peaceful rural alpine scenes with local people in agricultural pursuits. A group of local German musicians playing folk music as village people dance outdoors.
