In the distance, smoke rises from two Japanese ships that the Nautilus hit in Butaritari’s lagoon. The bombardment was called in by men of the 2nd Raider Battalion during the 2nd Raiders’ famed Makin Raid of August 17-18, 1942.

(This final scene is likely in Algiers where the Generals met in the range November 13-14, 1942 after Algiers fell quickly, following the start of the Operation Torch landings. This was a Nazi German effort to continue the Tour de France during World War II. Large crowds gathered to watch the cycling event on the streets of Paris.
