Soviet Voshkhod-2 spacecraft is launched in the Soviet Union; cosmonaut Leonov walks in space; Moscow award ceremony

Preparations for launch of Soviet Union Voshkhod-2 spacecraft from Baikonur spaceport, during 1960s "space race" between Soviet Union and the United States. Voshkod 2 of R-7 family of rockets seen on a rail car. The rail car pulls up with spacecraft and rocket is loaded onto gantry. The space craft and the launch vehicle are erected. View of cosmonaut as he ascends stairs, enters an elevator and prepares for flight. A fiery flare emerges as the spacecraft is launched. (Note: Image of spacecraft during initial ascent appears to show a Vostok 3KA launcher, or Vostok-K, like that in which Yuri Gagarin was launched; not the Voskhod variant that carried Alexey Leonov and Pavel Belyayev.) Views of ignition and launch of spacecraft; view of it ascending. Next scene shows Soviet cosmonaut Alexey Leonov conducting the first spacewalk by an astronaut, on March 18, 1965. Final scene shows Soviet cosmonauts at an award and recognition ceremony in Moscow on March 23, 1965. Leonov and Belyayev walk side by side on a red carpet toward a reviewing stand of Russian officials. They ascend stairs of platform and salute the Russian leaders.

U.S. sends marines and army troops to Vietnam, and President Johnson defends the decision.

First scene shows U.S. marines descending rope net ladder from side of the USS Pickaway (APA-222) in waters off Da Nang, South Vietnam. Next, marines of 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment are seen hitting the beach at Danang, from her Higgins boats on 7 July,1965. Scene shifts to U.S. Air Force C-130 aircraft carrying U.S. army troops who are photographed as they step from the aircraft. Trucks carrying some of these soldiers drive along a road in South Vietnam. Officer confer over tactical map of an area. Vietnamese civilian refugees are seen struggling to depart. Small Vietnamese children at a school or other institution, are photographed as they line up and wash themselves before eating a meal. Smallest children are seated in high chairs. President Johnson seen saying "I do not find it easy to send the flower of our youth, our finest young men, into battle." Events that initiated World War I and animated map showing involvement of nations from 1914 through 1918

Opening scene shows a man being roughed up by a group of men in an alleyway. A slate comments (in French) that when nations are bellicose, an assassination can cause a world war. Next, a slate shows picture of the world and states (in English) "One murder may start a world war." Another slate (in French) states that In 1914, while Europe's armies and fleets were more powerful than they had ever been, the nephew of the Emperor of Austria (Archduke Ferdinand) was assassinated. A front page is shown of newspaper, "Journal De Geneve" carrying the story. Next scene is a view of the city of Sarajevo. The ancient Emperor's Mosque dominates the scene. A slate appears asking Where is Sarajevo? It is followed by a map of Europe in 1914, which zooms in on Austria and Serbia and identifies and labels Sarajevo,in Austria, close to the Serbian border. Slates (in French) says Austria accused Serbia of War and other nations enter the melee. Animated World map shows the nations getting involved, starting with the German Empire in 1914, including its African colonies, and then successively showing Russia, France, Belgium,Great Britain, Japan, and the Ottoman Empire. Map advances to 1915, showing the Italian empire, Bulgaria,and Central Arabia. In 1916 it adds Portugal, Roumania. Next, the U.S.A. is added in, 1917, along with Central and South America, Greece, Siam, and China. Finally, the slate shows the war ending in 1918. Slate shows Armistice Day, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th Month (November), with time shown on hands of Big Ben in London.
