A large cathedral dominates the opening scene. It seems relatively undamaged although their are destroyed buildings all around it from bombing during World War 2. People are seen carrying their belongings as they flee the area. They pass through narrow corridors between destroyed buildings. View of an orphanage named St. Catharina. View of infants in cribs inside the orphanage. Staff and nurses leading the children out of the building and then loading them aboard a bus. One attendant giving treats to very small infants. Staff waving goodbye to the children and caregivers on the bus, as it departs. Refugees using wagons pulled by cattle to transport them and their belongings. Livestock on the hoof being herded along a road.
Narrator announces the "9th of November in Munich." (It is 1941, early in World War 2.) A gathering of Nazi officials in a church. They are celebrating the anniversary of the Nazi Beer Hall Putsch of November 9, 1923. Next, a large group of Nazi officials are seen conversing in a large hall. Adolf Hitler arrives to the cheers and Nazi salutes of the attendees, as he walks through their midst and spends time greeting and shaking hands with his old comrades from the 1920s. He steps to a podium. Closeup of him at the podium responding to the adulation of the assembly by rendering a bent elbow Nazi salute. The audience is applauding. According to the narrator, Hitler speaks disparagingly about U.S. President Roosevelt and Soviet leader Stalin.
Christening of Lufthansa Airlines Junkers G38b airplane , registry number D-2500, by German Reich Minister of Aviation, Hermann Goering. He gives a speech during the ceremony. The G38 aircraft in the background. People stand around the aircraft. Other German Cabinet Ministers stand in a group. Goering officially names the airplane: "Generalfeldmarshall von Hindenburg" which is already painted on the plane. He smashes a bottle of champagne across the nose of the airplane, .
Rally at the Zeppelin Field, during the 6th Nazi Party Congress, Nuremberg, 1934. 6th Hitler rides around the field in an open car to the cheers of attendees. In dramatic scene, Heinrich Himmler, Adolf Hitler, and Viktor Lutze walk slowly along wide path between sea of rally participants standing silently at attention on both sides of them, as mournful music is played. A large memorial wreath is seen and several large burning flames, on pillars.
Japanese submarine being welcomed in a German harbor, 30 September 1942 during World War II. German Naval vessels escort the Japanese submarine into the harbor. Officers and sailors stand on the deck of the Japanese submarine.German Admirals board the submarine and greet a Japanese admiral. A German womanpresents flowers to the Japanese Admiral. The Japanese Admiral converses with head of German U-Boat Command, Admiral Karl Doenitz, who is later seen aboard the submarine greeting its officers. On shore, the Japanese Admiral and staff are greeted by German Grand Admiral Erich Raeder, Commander in Chief of the German Navy.
People's Court Trial Concerning Plot of 20th July, 1944, to assassinate Hitler and overthrow the government. Judge Roland Freisler presides. People seated in a court room. A man in civilian clothes is brought before the judge who harangues him rather than listening to any testimony. A second man, Count Peter Yorck von Wartenburg, cousin of Count von Stauffenberg ( who carried the bomb in his briefcase) is also harangued by Judge Freisler, but manages to get a few words into the record. (World War II period).
