Mix of actual World War 2 footage scenes outside the United States, and dramatized war scenes inside the U.S. Narrator speaks as a U.S. soldier writes a letter to his mother at home, in which he contrasts the hardships of war torn countries and peoples with the relative safety and lack of suffering of the U.S. population during World War 2. Opening scene shows typical American women riding in a bus. One woman, ostensibly the soldier's mother, climbs aboard a bus as another woman steps out of it. A woman visits a friend who says she had to give up her Red Cross work because it didn't leave her time to get her hair done each week. A group of women at a garden party bridge club. Narrator says one of them could not work at a USO canteen because it conflicted with her bridge party. A woman lounging in a garden chair, is claimed to avoid a war job because they are all boring and dirty. A maid serves some hard to obtain foods to two woman at lunch. The hostess accused of obtaining them on the black market. The scene shifts to the letter writing son serving with the army in Europe. Adolf Hitler hosts Bulgarian Regents Prince Kiril and Prof. Bogdan Filov at the "Wolf's Lair,"after the death of King Boris III
Film opens showing Adolf Hitler and staff awaiting arrival of a train at the platform of Gorlitz Station, the private station railroad station serving Hitler's East Prussian headquarters (called the Wolf's Lair) near Rastenburg (now Ketrzyn, Poland) . A Steam locomotive pulls a passenger train into station. The Bulgarian regent Prince Kiril steps from the train and greets Hitler. The second regent, Professor Bogdan Filov, gets off the train and shakes hands with Hitler, Generals on Hitler's staff, including Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, and German Foreign Minister Joachim Von Ribbentrop. Hitler escorts Prince Kril to a waiting car. Brief glimpse of the Bulgarian flag mounted on side of the car. Next, Hitler escorts Prince Kril from the car into a building at the Wolf's Lair. Members of Hitler's military staff and Professor Filov follow them into the building. Inside, Hitler removes his hat and gives it to an aide. He greets Bulgarian officers and officials. Several closeups of Hitler. Outside a Bulgarian officer chats with Marshal Keitel and another German officer. Hitler and Prince Kril emerge from the building and Hitler bids them farewell. Exchange German Prisoners of war return home to Stettin Germany, from Oran, Algeria during World War II
The Italian hospital ship, "Gradisca," arrives in Stettin harbour, in Germany, (Stettin on the Oder River, now Poland, Szczecin), during World War 2. She carries recuperating exchange German prisoners of war, back home from Oran, Algeria. They are greeted by medical staff and many well-wishers. Children run to the ship as it berths and throw flowers to the soldiers on deck. Wounded on stretchers are removed first. Then the ambulatory soldiers disembark amid warm welcome. Another steamship is seen approaching on the river. It is the Freigeleit. (Actually, this is the French ship,“Djenne,” in German possession, and it too is bringing exchange German POWs back from Oran.) German soldiers fill her upper decks. They play music on deck and celebrate their homecoming. (All the troops, congregating on their port sides, caused both the Gradisca, and the Freigeleit to list to port, somewhat, as they approach the pier.) A bouquet of flowers is raised to the deck of the Freigeleit, on a line, as she ties up. Red Cross nurses line up holding flowers, as sick or wounded soldiers are taken off the ship on stretchers. Then the remaining troops disembark and are greeted with flowers. Some troops write notes to be transmitted to loved ones. A military band plays on the pier. The soldiers board waiting railroad trains to continue their journey.
