Colonel Bernt Balchen prepares to attempt rescue of the survivors of the SS Viking vessel. The vessel was rocked by explosion about eight miles off the Horse Islands. It caught fire during shooting of film The Viking. Balchen is seen consulting with two other men beside his parked Sikorsky S-38 sesquiplane amphibious aircraft named "Colonial." Colonel Balchen climbs into the flying boat, starts the twin engines, taxis, and takes off on the mission from Boston.
