A large wooden replica of the Iron Cross medal is set up outdoors, where persons may drive nails into it, to mark their contributions of from one to five marks to the Red Cross, during World War 1. An older man in military uniform taps several nails into the top of the cross. Visiting American, Jane Addams, co-founder of Hull House, in Chicago, and President of the newly formed Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) stands nearby observing, as the man sets a nail into position at the center of the cross. He then lifts a small boy up, so he can finish hammering it in.

A civilian talking with several ambulatory wounded soldiers. He asks one about the wound to his head. Two recuperating soldiers watch as two others play chess. A group of recuperating soldiers pose as they gather around one who is bedridden. Some play cards on the lap of a soldier in a wheel chair. Scene shifts to inside the hospital. A bedridden soldier poses with nurse, for the camera. Some comrades stand behind his bed. She puts his military cap on his head. (Slate states that he died 20 minutes later.) More recuperating soldiers playing card games with those in beds in the ward. Doctor and nurses and staff seen in the ward. A soldier of short stature, with arm in a sling steps into the camera view as it pans along the ward, showing several of the recuperating soldiers. A hospital orderly wheels a patient towards the operating room.

A German soldier who was injured and lost both hands during World War 1 demonstrates ability to do tasks with the aid of metal mechanical prostheses. He is seen in a workshop, where he grasps and uses a file to smooth an object held in a vise. He then loosens the vise and places the object aside. He grasps a sponge and wipes his face. He picks up a comb and combs his hair.

Despite wartime, the famous German derby (Deutsches Derby) race is run as usual,at the Horner racecourse (Horner Rennbahn) in Hamburg, during World War 1. Two German sportsmen chat as they sit on lawn chairs at the racecourse. They wear boots, and one has driving goggles on his hat and smokes a cigar. Two uniformed German Army officers are seen standing amongst the crowd. A section of grandstand with flags flying atop it, in the background. Scene shifts to what looks like thousands of spectators crowded between the grandstands and the racetrack. Horses seen leaving the paddock and entering the racetrack proper, with jockeys aboard and escorted by their owners or trainers. Closeup of American jockeys, George William Archibald at left and Fred Korb, at right, chatting with German racing enthusiasts before the start. View from the racecourse infield, as horses and riders pass the grandstands. View from the inside railing as they pass. The officers are mounted on horseback and proceed through the ranks of soldiers drawn up in formation for inspection. One row of soldiers is standing behind their respective machine guns. The Generals seen ready to review the troops in parade. The infantry marches first, followed by horse-drawn artillery pulling French 75 field pieces, support elements consisting of horse-drawn covered wagons, and then troops in motorized trucks and automobiles. British use coal gas as substitute motor fuel during World War I
Large tank filled with coal gas seen mounted on a motorcycle. Campion Motors Nottingham, is written on side of the tank, and Campion Coal Gas Motors on the front. The motorcycle pulls away from the company works at Mettham Street, Nottingham. The motorcycle and tank structure driving along a highway, with driver plus two men riding on the tank undercarriage. They are accompanied by another man on a motorcycle and one in its sidecar. The cycle with the tank demonstrates its maneuverability. Change of scene shows driver of a coal gas fueled bus refueling from a gas pipe. Fumes surround the connection as he refuels. He disconnects and tucks his refueling hose away. Passengers are sitting in the bus. Closeup of rear of bus shows huge inflatable gas tank atop the bus. "Chapman's, Driven by Coal Gas," written on back of the tank.
