Various aircraft and aviation tests and testing equipment used at Wright Air Development Center

Aircraft undergo various tests at the Wright Air Development Center of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Testing of magnesium burner attached to an aircraft flying at night for night photography. A static lightning test is done on a model of a F-84 Thunderjet aircraft, for the study of interference. A technician seated at an electron microscope instrument panel adjusts dials. Image of a highly magnified particle is shown. Two technicians work with an early computer (referred to as an"electronic brain" by the narrator) as they use it to solve calculations before an aircraft is built. Another technician is shown working on a computer instrument referred to as a "polynomial evaluator" by the narrator. A test subject in an "aero-medical" chamber is seen wearing flight clothing and oxygen mask. A technician seated at control outside chamber. Test subject in chamber and various instruments kept in side. Instrument records the altitude, pressure release valve punctured. Test shows pressurized quit inflating. A brake lining is tested an an aircraft tire, simulating a high stress, rapid stop. A human subject seated in an ejection seat experience an ejection seat test, rising rapidly upward on a twin rail system. Aerial view of air-to-air refueling of KC-97 Stratotanker and B-50 Superfortress aircraft. A pilot in cockpit as he maneuvers in for refueling. Refueling of B-50 from KC-97.

First powered flight of an X-15 Rocket Plane. Also scenes of several other X-15 powered flights.

X-15 first powered flight on Thursday, 17 September, 1959. (X-15 No. 2, tail number: 56-6671 with LR-11 engines. Scott Crossfield flew this mission at mach 2.11 and altitude 52,341 feet.) Scenes of several other X-15 powered flights are also shown. View of the water tower at Edwards Air Force Base, california. Overhead, NASA NB-52A, No. 003 and an F-100D chase plane, are seen at high altitude, with contrails behind them. The X-15, cradled under the B-52's right wing, drops clear, starts its rocket engines and begins its first independent powered flight, climbing rapidly away from the B-52. NASA camera tracks it, appearing as a moving white dot against the sky. The next sequences show later powered flights. View of NASA B-52 and three chase planes leaving contrails overhead. X-15 drops, its engines are running and falls behind the B-52, before accelerating rapidly, passing to its right, and continuing upward. Another scene shows brief glimpse of NASA B-52 overhead (no contrails). In final scene, X-15 is seen moving rapidly, leaving a long contrail behind it. Cloud then obscures the image somewhat.

X-15 rocket plane lands on Rogers Dry Lake runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California

F-100D chase plane flies over X-15 rocket plane while the latter is on final approach to land at Rogers Dry Lake runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California. NASA camera follows the X-15 as it nears the runway in a medium nose-up attitude and then touches down, first on its main skids, followed by its nose gear. The X-15 raises a trail of dust as it continues down the runway, past a truck in the foreground. As it comes to a halt, a truck races out to it. Two H-21 helicopters fly over it and one hovers nearby. Another truck and a fire truck and ambulance drive out to the X-15. It is last seen surrounded by emergency and support vehicles. (This mission involving X-15, tail number 56-6671, was unsuccessful, due to a liquid oxygen leak.)
