U.S. 8th Army tries to slow Chinese Spring offensive in Korean War. U.S. Marines distribute clothing to Korean children.
U.S. soldiers of the 8th Army are jammed aboard an M46 Patton tank as they participate in a UN counter-attack against Chinese forces in the Korean War. Several tanks full of soldiers and some in jeeps, are seen fording river swollen by Spring melting and rains. Closeup of GIs riding tank. Narrator states they are heading beyond the 38th parallel. U.S. troops seen hunkered down as UN shell fire strikes at Chinese positions to slow down their anticipated Spring Offensive. White smoke rises from nearby exploding Chinese shells. U.S. 8th Army troops fall back as shells fall around them, to take up new defensive positions. Scene shifts to a large gathering of South Korean waifs. Closeup of some in a line, and inside a building, receiving clothing from U.S. Marines of the 1st Marine Division. It had been collected by the Marine Corps League, in many American cities. Enthusiastic speech by President Hoover at Republican National Convention in Cleveland Ohio
Former U.S. President Herbert Hoover delivers an enthusiastic speech to the Republican National Convention, during the Great Depression. Speaking out against Democratic Party New Deal programs under President Roosevelt, former President Hoover says "For the first time in the history of America, we have heard the gospel of class hatred preached from the White House." He goes on to speak against high government spending and the increase in the U.S. national debt. He states that the number unemployed is the same as at the time of the 1932 election. He wonders "what is going to be done after the election with these measures which the Constitution forbids, and the people by their votes have never authorized? What do the New Dealers propose to do with these unstable currencies, these unbalanced budgets, these debts and these taxes?" He goes on to say "our system is a government of laws and not of men. And the Republican party holds to its promises and its laws." Huge applause in the public auditorium. The NBC, MBS, CBS networks broadcast his speech.

Newly appointed Regent (Chief Executive) and former Qing Dynasty Emperor of China, Henry Puyi, along with new Prime Minister Chang Hsiao-hsu in the Imperial Palace, now the Museum of the Imperial Palace of Manchukuo (No.5 Guangfu North Road, Kuancheng District, Changchun 130052 China).
U.S. 29th Infantry Division crosses Ruhr River and captures Jülich, Germany during World War II
Troops of the U.S. 29th Infantry Division cross a floating footbridge erected by U.S. Army engineers across the Ruhr river at Linnich, Germany, during World War 2. Their mission is to capture the fortress town of Jülich. They hurry across the bridge under enemy fire. Major General Charles Gerhardt, Commander of the 29th Infantry, crosses the footbridge along with his troops. Troops enter the city, which has been destroyed by prior Allied bombing, and flush out remaining German snipers from basements of ruined buildings. Soldier seen firing into a basement. Remains of footbridge across the Ruhr river, destroyed by Germans during the night. Combat engineers work building a new heavy pontoon bridge across the river. A German soldier (narrator states: in an American uniform) carrying a white flag, walks towards U.S. soldiers on the opposite bank of the river, and is shot by one of them. U.S. troops cross the new heavier bridge across the river. A U.S. tank that had crossed the river, is seen. A banner is seen, fastened above a stone arch, reading: "This is Julich Germany. Sorry it is so messed up. But we were in a hurry! 29th (Blue & Grey) Div." The Division insignia appears on the banner.
Professor Frederick Barghoorn arrested by the Soviet Union on spy charges and released after 16 days.
President John Kennedy at speaker's stand in a press conference speaks that Professor Frederick Barghoorn was on a cultural mission to Russia and Russians will release him. Professor is released after spending 16 days in prison. Professor Frederick emerges from plane and is greeted by State Department Officials and family members in New York. At a news conference on his return, Professor Barghoorn said that in Russia you can be accused of Intelligence activity merely by walking down the street. Press cameramen recording event.
