During the retreat back to South Korea, at Yonpo inside the Hamhung - Hungnam defense perimeter. U.S. soldiers evacuate the wounded from Chosin Reservoir battle and other personnel from Yonpo air base. Military covered trucks and vans lined up on snow covered air base. Transport planes in the background including C-119 Flying Boxcars and C-47 of the U.S. Far East Air Forces Combat Cargo Command. Soldiers shift the wounded from the vans into the waiting planes. Soldiers carry the wounded on stretchers onto a U.S. Marines C-54 Skymaster transport aircraft. The C-54 taxis and takes off.

They take off their hats as a sign of respect. A man takes out cans from this pile. The cans contain notes from various explorers. They read a note dated 14-16 December 1911, written by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. He puts the note back into the can, closes it and replaces the same into the monument.
