Towers and complex piping and structures rise high above the ground as part of the new concentrated oxygen blast furnace being constructed at a steel plant in Tula Russia,Soviet Union. A prefabricated part is lowered into place by cable from a crane. A train of open rail cars moves through the factory yard. Russian construction experts contracted to build the furnace are seen working on the last part of it. They tighten bolts and weld sections of the furnace.
A column of trucks carrying grain from the seasonal harvest is seen moving along a road in rural Ukraine. A column of horse-drawn wagons also moves along the road, giving way to the motor vehicles. (Rains have delayed the harvest and collective farmers are anxious to deliver their grain.) Trucks are parked in a muddy lot and farmers carry sacks of grain, on their shoulders, to a central collection point. Soviet authorities examine the grains being delivered. Women fill sacks with grain from their trucks and men carry them into the collection warehouse. The last scene shows a truck displaying a large picture of Joseph Stalin atop the cab.
Post-war subway condtruction in Moscow, Russia, Soviet Union. Brief view of cars driving along street, followed by scenes of subway workers in tunnel, 165 feet below the surface. The tunnel ceiling and walls are reinforced by shoring structures. A power shovel dumps dug out rock and earth into an open rail car where a worker packs it with a long-handled tool. Drillers at the tunnel face use pneumatic tools to dig through sedimentary layers of material. A man and woman push a rail car full of diggings through the tunnel. A surveyor uses a transit suspended from the ceiling by a wire. A woman fastens a thin rope to a light cable. Back at the face of the excavation, drillers stop and one calls out to others drilling from the opposite end (unseen). The drillers then commence again, and break through the remaining wall separating the two ends of the tunnel. Drillers from the opposite sides greet one another and celebrate the completion of this 12 mile segment of the subway tunnel.
Salt being extracted from the surface of Lake Lake Baskunchak, 270 km North of the Caspian Sea, USSR. Narrator says it is sufficient for the needs of the entire Soviet Union. View of waves rippling over salt deposits in a part of the Russian lake. A dredging-type tool spins as it grinds and extracts salt from the lake surface. A conveyer system carrying the extracted salt to rail cars. A woman inside a control shack, on a railroad car, controls the speed of the conveyer with a large wheel. Salt is seen clearly deposited on the conveyer panels as they rise. View from below, of the control shack and water being discharged back into the lake from a pipe. View of the conveyer, mounted on its rail car, emptying salt into a train of open rail cars on a parallel set of tracks. At the same time water flows from its discharge pipe, on the opposite side, back into the lake. Finally, a locomotive is seen pulling rail cars filled with salt.
