Prime Minister Shastri died in Tashkent, Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic (present day Uzbekistan). Prime Minister's body being cremated on the banks of the Yamuna River. Inaugural Ceremony of U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the United States Capitol in Washington DC. People gathered for the ceremony. President Reagan addresses them. He says that he has approved a research program to find a security shield that would destroy nuclear missiles before they reach their targets (this later became the Strategic Defense Initiative or SDI, or so-called Star Wars initiative). It would help demilitarize the arsenals of the earth. He says that there will be a meeting with the Soviets hoping to agree on a way to rid the world of the threat of nuclear destruction. He also says that all the Americans will work together for achieving success.

Russian airmen Gromov, Yumashev, and Danilin set a nonstop flight endurance record in 1937 of 62 hours 17 minutes. The airmen fly a Tupolev ANT-25 over the North pole from Moscow to a dairy pasture outside San Jacinto, California (near Los Angeles).
