Ellsworth Vines defeats George Lott in National Title tennis match at Forest Hills, New York.

Nineteen year old, Henry Ellsworth Vines, of Pasadena California and opponent George Lott, Jr., of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, battle for 1931 National Tennis Championship at Forest Hills, New York on September 12, 1931, in the 51st U.S. Men's Singles Tennis championship match. They are seen entering the stadium before a capacity crowd, and shaking hands before the match. Views of several strokes and exchanges during the match. At the end, both players meet at the net,shake hands, and walk off the court together. Vines beats Lott (79 63 97 75). Vines poses with trophy.

Remains of 44 killed in fire on USS Oriskany, are moved from the ship to the shore at Subic Bay, Philippines

Remains of 44 who lost their lives in the fire on October 26, 1966, aboard the U.S. Aircraft Carrier, USS Oriskany (CVA-34) are respectfully covered by American flags and placed on platforms for transfer from the ship to the shore at Subic Bay Naval Station, Philippines. U.S.Navy Catholic Chaplain, Fr.Conall Richard Coughlin, who is stationed at Subic Bay assists the ship's Chaplain (Commander) in performing final religious rites over the flag-draped bodies.( The ship's Catholic Chaplain, LCDR William John Garrity, lost his own life, heroically serving the injured on October, 26, 1966). The bodies are transferred by crane to the dock, below where an honor guard stands. Sailors carry individual flag-draped coffins. Clergymen in ceremonial garb lead sailors carrying a coffin.

U.S. Navy Catholic Chaplain, Fr.Conall Richard Coughlin (who is stationed at Subic Bay) and the ship's Chaplain (Lt Commander) officiate on the ship's deck as coffins are placed on pallets.(The ship's own Catholic Chaplain, LCDR William John Garrity, perished, performing his duties, on October, 26, 1966, and is among these dead ). Sailors aboard the Oriskany open boxes of American flags as they prepare the coffins for transfer. Honor guard with rifles stand at parade rest on the pier. Church officials on the pier. A C-130 transport aircraft sits nearby with its rear door open ready to receive the coffins.
