Food shortage and desperate conditions among needy and impoverished German civilian people after World War 2. View of garbage dumps in Bamberg in Germany. An old woman seen smiling. Several numbers of children look in the garbage dump for food. A woman eats from a rusty can found in the dump.
Large numbers of surrendered German soldiers march in loose formation along a street in Munich, Germany, a week before the end of World War 2, in Europe. Point of view (POV) shot from camera moving beside and slightly faster than the column of surrendered and captured German soldiers. A group of American soldiers riding on a Sherman tank, pass the camera. Several M-36 Jackson tank destroyers pass, also loaded with U.S. soldiers. Two German women are seated, quietly, on a parked M1 57mm gun from an Anti-Tank Company of the 222nd Infantry Regiment (42nd Rainbow Division). Saddened German civilian spectators watch the goings on from an island in the center of the street. Pedestrians, cyclists, and people moving goods on hand carts, cross on an intersecting street. The columns of surrendered German soldiers line the other street, away from the intersection. Some of the German women watching wipe tears from their eyes.
German civilian crowd seen on the streets in Munich in Germany near end of World War 2, with poverty and scarcity common. Men and women carrying sacks of fuel coal on shoulders. People carrying boxes and buckets filled with coal gathered from coal yards. Several people load coal on hand carts. People gather near the entrance of a warehouse or tunnel. They crowd and push each other as they try to get boxes of supplies from inside the storage area. Two German women use bricks or stones to try to break open a wooden supply container (unsuccessfully). Other German citizens carry away similarly sized boxes of unknown supplies.
Large numbers of French and other European prisoners, along with displaced persons (carrying their belongings in carts) are seen filling the roads and paths in an exodus from a German prison camp, in final days of World War 2. Several boys pose outside the gate of a German Army establishment. The military evacuees are all dressed in uniform and seem in relatively good health. Several carry a French tricolor flag. They proceed along a path beside a river, and assemble in a grassy area near a town.
Scenes showing Cologne, Germany, near the end of World War 2, in Europe. Nearby damaged buildings seen from inside a tall building, through hole blasted its wall. Camera pans across the scene. Some rooftops seem relatively inscathed, while others are gone and buildings reduced to shells. Rubble around the remains of buildings. At left in one view, the Spires of the Cologne cathedral can be seen, briefly, silhouetted against the sky, near the Rein (Rhine) river, in the distance. Scene shifts to view from inside a tower of the cathedral. The remains of the nearby Hohenzollern Bridge, are seen with spans dropped into the Rhine River. Bombed out buildings seen very close to the cathedral. (But,there is no evidence the cathedral is damaged.) View of the Rhine River from a different vantage point looking past a gargoyle, on a cathedral parapet.
View from a ground level entrance of the partially wrecked Cathedral of Cologne in Cologne, Germany during World War 2. Scene shifts to a town or village with U.S. Army trucks passing by and German civilians in a queue, a few doors down from the Konditorei (patisserie or bakery). Directional sign pointing toward 67th Medical Evacuation Hospital implies the location is in or near Bonn, as the 67th was located there until March 31, 1945. Scene changes to an elevated view of the Rhine River from the Northwest looking toward the Victor Bridge pontoon bridge, one other pontoon bridge, and the wrecked Ludendorff Bridge (also known as the Remagen Bridge), in the distance, at Remagen, Germany.
