(Note: This commercial submarine was operated by the North German Lloyd Line. Submerging to avoid British patrols, she was able to carry valuable cargoes through the British (and other Entente Powers) WWI blockade. On this first trip to the U.S. She carried industrial dyes and gemstones. The Deutschland left Baltimore about 3 weeks later and returned safely to Bremen with with cargo of nickel, tin and rubber.)

Crowd gathered around a Boeing Stratocruiser passenger aircraft, operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation, as it arrives at Washington National Airport. A ladder is placed at the door of the aircraft (bearing letters MATS, for Military Air Transport Service). British Prime Minister Winston Churchill,and Sir Anthony Eden, exit the aircraft, followed by other officials in their party. Vice President Nixon shakes hands with Churchil at the foot of the aircraft steps. Lots of photographers take pictures and people around clap. Churchill addresses the gathering, with Vice President Nixon, at his left, Sir Anthony Eden, at his right, and U.S. Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, behind him. He turns to greet Dulles, following his remarks.
In the first exchange of Allied and Axis wounded prisoners of war, the British Hospital Ship, Atlantis, with number 33 painted on her side, steams into port, at Leith, Scotland, (and then on to Liverpool, England) during World War 2. She is returning Allied wounded from Germany, by way of Goeteborg, Sweden. British soldiers are carried off ship on stretchers. Several ambulatory American soldiers leave ship on foot.
