An American ship being pummeled by wind and wave in a storm at sea. Next, sailors are seen preparing to fire a 4-inch / 50 caliber Mark 9 deck gun mounted near the ship's stern.. The sailors work on the gun, while an Officer holding a log book, of sorts, observes. The sailors raise the gun barrel and rotate it to starboard. A U.S. Navy lifeboat flying the American flag and manned by sailors is seen carrying about a dozen American and/or European civilians at high speed through the water. Closeup of civilians sitting on the floor of a another boat amidst pieces of luggage and other items. Sailors with them hold onto cargo to steady themselves as the boat rocks about. Civilians are assisted by sailors as they come aboard the Navy ship, from the smaller boats. They are greeted by Ship's officers. Some women board, followed by a man who hands a little girl to a sailor who brings her on deck, where she joins another little girl, similarly dressed in the company of an older woman. Glimpse of civilians on deck, including some gathered around the chlldren. A well-dressed, distinguished looking older man converses with a woman. Those on board watch for others who may be boarding. A view from the ship of a boat filled with luggage as it arrives beside the ship. As sailors maneuver the boat alongside the ship, an old and infirm woman with her companion is also seen on the boat.
