Commander Richard E. Byrd, receives the National Geographic Society Hubbard Gold Medal, from President Calvin Coolidge. The event takes place on June 23, 1926, in the auditorium of the National Geographic Headquarters, at 1146 Sixteenth Street, in Washington DC. The audience includes Mrs. Coolidge (on the stage) as well as cabinet officers; members of the diplomatic corps; and National Geographic Society members. Scene shifts to grounds of the White House, on February 27, 1927, as President Calvin Coolidge places the Tiffany Cross Medal of Honor around the neck of Commander Richard E. Byrd. United States Navy Lieutenant Commander Richard Evelyn Byrd and aviator Floyd Bennett become the first to reach the North Pole by air. Byrd's streamer Chantler arrives at Kings Bay in Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Two ships in an ice clogged harbor. Lt. Commander Byrd is welcomed by his friendly rival Captain Roald Amundsen. Amundsen climbs from one ship to another and shakes hands with Byrd. Byrd and Amundsen walk around and look over Byrd's Fokker tri-motor aircraft 'Josephine Ford' which is equipped with skis and is parked in snow. As U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Richard Byrd, and pilot Floyd Bennett step from their Fokker airplane upon their return from overflight of the North Pole, they are greeted and congratulated by Norwegian explorer, Ronald Amundsen and American Lincoln Ellsworth (who, themselves, are preparing to fly, from Spitsbergen, to the North Pole, and beyond, in the airship Norge). Members of the Byrd expedition team rush to greet the returning aviators and huddle about them expressing congratulations. They lift Byrd and Bennett up on their shoulders. Crewmen are gather and celebrate, aboard the SS Chantier, as a sailor who wouldn't shave until the mission was complete, gets his 34-day beard shaved off, as one of the sailors plays a ukulele.

While United States Navy Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd's North Pole expedition prepares for its flight to the pole and back, the Dirigible, "Norge," positioning for the Amundsen-Ellsworth 1926 Transpolar Flight, is seen in flight over Kings Bay Spitsbergen.
